Contemporary Music from Israel:
A festival of music by living Israeli composers

Monday, April 17, 2023 to Sunday, April 23, 2023

Sponsored by the Provost's Global Forum 2023, this week-long festival presents a unique collaboration between the University of Iowa and the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. Events will take place in the Voxman School of Music, all free and open to the public.

The festival will feature the Meitar Ensemble, a professional group of musicians dedicated to contemporary music of living composers and based at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance (JAMD). Hosted by the Center for New Music (CNM), the series of performances will feature 32 new and recent compositions performed by the Meitar, Terdarim (a student-led group at JAMD) and UI ensembles. These works were curated by Amit Dolberg, director of Meitar, and represent the most salient and compelling new voices from well-known and established composers living and working in Israel. Many composers will be in attendance, and there will be opportunities to meet them through seminar presentations scheduled throughout the week. The festival will culminate with performances by UIs large ensembles on Sunday evening.

This festival is made possible through the generous support and contributions from the Stanley-University of Iowa Foundation Support OrganizationUI International Programs, Hancher Auditorium, the UI School of Music, the University of Iowa String Quartet Residency, the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies, Kay and Mace Braverman, the Hank Feir Fundthe UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Consulate General of Israel to the Midwest, and a UI Arts and Humanities Initiative (AHI) Major Conference Grant.
