The Laptop Orchestra of the University of Iowa (LOUi) is a newly founded experimental new music ensemble constructed and maintained by the Center for New Music. This course will focus mainly on rehearsing, performing and creating music written specifically for laptop ensemble. It will also touch on the history of the laptop orchestra as an ensemble in the greater context of the history of electronic music, improvisation, and computer programming. The ensemble will engage in at least one performance per semester.

We plan to meet for 2 hours each Monday, starting at 5:30pm. Additional Friday meetings will occur as necessary. The goal for this semester is three-fold: to prepare and perform a range of works for laptop ensemble; to develop new works individually/collectively for the ensemble and to develop/refine the laptop ensemble performance aesthetic. Students will code works as necessary and be responsible for assigned reading material.

Students will be responsible for realizing the assigned scores/compositions. The works for the fall concert will serve as models for the compositions that will be created for the spring semester (April 23rd). Monday meetings will be used predominantly for rehearsal of music while Friday will serve as a time for problem solving, coding, sectional rehearsals and creating pieces for the Spring concert.

Composers the ensemble will perform: David Gordon, John Thompson, Scott Cazan, Bruno Ruveria, Eoin Callery, ( waiting for: Keith Kirchoff & Brian Hansen — maybe The Hub, John Bischoff )
